The latitude is 45.73 and the longitude is 121.526. Located above\u00a0WA State Route 14, the 20 square mile community with\u00a0approximately 1,053 residents is nestled on the side of Underwood Mountain (2,755 feet elevation) which rises between the <a href=\"http:\/\/columbiariverimages.com\/Regions\/Places\/little_white_salmon_river.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">Little White Salmon River<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/columbiariverimages.com\/Regions\/Places\/white_salmon_river.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">White Salmon River<\/a>.\u00a0The Underwood\u00a0Community Center includes a gym, playground with picnic tables, outdoor basketball and tennis courts, horse riding paddock, planned community gardens, with a nearby\u00a0post office (ZIP 98651) and a recently built fire station.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of good soil and a great climate allows our vineyards to produce premium wine grapes and our small organic farms to thrive. The nearby National Fish Hatchery raises over 15 million Tule Fall Chinook salmon each year. And large numbers of windsurfers enjoy the brisk winds here in The Scenic Gorge.<\/p>\n<p>Underwood\u00a0mountain is actually an early Pleistocene shield volcano\u00a0that erupted\u00a0between 20,000 and 850,000 years ago and covered\u00a0east-dipping <a href=\"http:\/\/columbiariverimages.com\/Regions\/Places\/columbia_river_basalt.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">Grande Ronde Basalt <\/a>a few hundred feet above the river. The basalt of Underwood Mountain is composed of numerous blocky, jointed flows, each about 10 to 30 feet thick. The total thickness of the basalt reaches at least 590 feet. Underwood lavas crossed and probably briefly dammed the Columbia River as remnants of the Underwood flows can be found on the Oregon side of the river.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Tell me about Underwood, WA!
