Once renovations are complete, the updated post office building will have an exterior look and feel similar to the Fire Station, adding a sense of continuity to service buildings in Underwood. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\nThe Underwood USPS Post Office<\/a> has been in its current location in Underwood since May 1996. The United States Postal Service (USPS) rents space from the Underwood Park and Recreation District (UPRD), paying a monthly fee to remain in its current location. In October 2024, the USPS renewed their rental contract for an additional seven (7) years. So long as we continue to make wise investments in keeping our buildings maintained, we anticipate the USPS and postal services will remain in Underwood for many years to come. <\/span>Below are five things you should know about our upcoming renovations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Post Office building is owned by Underwood residents.<\/h2><\/div>
<\/div>

In November 2016, the Community Center and Park were heading for a county surplus list and slated to be torn down. Recognizing the value and importance of preserving the park and grounds as a local resource, Underwood residents created a Park and Recreation District that year and elected five commissioners to serve as volunteer stewards of the park. In 2018, a small tax levy was passed to support operations at the park, and with this modest amount of funding secured (and stewards elected to be responsible for community tax dollars), ownership of the Community Center and Park (including the post office building) was officially deeded to residents in 2019. All maintenance for the Underwood Community Center and Park is now the responsibility of the UPRD Board of Commissioners<\/a>. Late last year, Underwood voters elected to renew a small, local tax levy to support the park, making renovations at the post office building possible.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Construction is scheduled to begin in May.<\/h2><\/div>

If weather permits, post office building updates are scheduled to begin in May of 2025. The Board is currently working on a thorough review of materials and finalizing plans with local licensed contractors.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Construction will not interfere with regular operations.<\/h2><\/div>

Updates and renovations to the post office building will not interfere with normal business operations<\/a> nor hinder access to P.O. boxes or routine services during regular business hours.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Improvements will ensure the integrity of the structure.<\/h2><\/div>

Improvements to the building will include new hardy plank siding, exterior lighting, fresh paint, new windows, and new entry and garage doors. These updates will ensure that the integrity of the building structure remains well-protected in the years ahead. We anticipate that renovations will significantly improve the property’s visual appearance once complete.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Post Office renovations are your tax dollars at work.<\/h2><\/div>

Tax dollars from our local levy will fund improvements to the post office building. Rental income from the post office building does not cover major infrastructure projects. These updates would not have been possible if the November 2024 tax levy<\/a> had not passed. The United States Postal Service continues to assess its rental contracts on a routine basis. Building updates and maintenance by the UPRD are essential if we want to retain favorable rental agreements with clients like the United States Postal Service.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
