Do you know their name? Their phone number? Would you know how to reach them in an emergency?

Living in Underwood offers something special: beautiful surroundings, peaceful homes, and a sense of independence. But somewhere along the way, many of us have lost something that once came naturally: knowing our neighbors.

We’re not talking about knowing everyone’s business or becoming best friends. We’re talking about the simple connections that can make a big difference when something unexpected happens.

Why Does Knowing Your Neighbor Matter?

Consider a few real situations that have happened in our community over the years:

🔥 During a recent fire on our mountain, a resident was trying to evacuate when her vehicle wouldn’t start. Thankfully, someone eventually arrived to help. But imagine how different that situation might have been if she had a neighbor’s phone number and someone nearby she could immediately call.

🏠 In another situation involving a burglary, a neighbor noticed people removing belongings from a nearby home but assumed the residents were moving. It wasn’t until later that it became clear a burglary had taken place

🪟 Also years ago, a February nighttime wind blew many shingles off a neighbor’s garage. At the time, the neighbor was in Southern California visiting her son. A caring neighbor had her son’s phone number, called, and by noon her roof was repaired

❤️ And perhaps one of the saddest reminders comes from an incident many years ago. A community member passed away in their home. With no family nearby and no one regularly checking in, months went by before someone discovered what had happened. It was only when someone finally came to check on the property, after bills had begun piling up, that the situation came to light.

These stories aren’t shared to frighten anyone or place blame. They’re reminders of why community connections matter. Sometimes the difference is simply knowing who to call, recognizing when something isn’t right, or noticing when someone hasn’t been seen in a while.

Let’s Bring Back Being Neighbors!

The community of Underwood is encouraging everyone to take a little time to reconnect with the people living nearby. It doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple introduction can be the beginning of a safer, more connected neighborhood.

Say hello! Introduce yourself to someone living nearby whom you haven’t met. Exchange contact information. Having a neighbor’s phone number can be invaluable during an emergency.

Check on your neighbors. Especially those who live alone, are elderly, or may have limited contact with others. If you haven’t seen or heard from someone in a while, a friendly call or knock on the door can mean more than you realize.

Know who might need assistance. Some neighbors may need extra help evacuating, especially those with mobility challenges or without reliable transportation.

Look out for each other’s homes. Knowing what is normal around a neighboring property can help you recognize when something seems unusual.

Share emergency plans. Talk about evacuation routes, transportation, and ways to communicate when emergencies happen.

Be someone your neighbor can count on. Sometimes simply knowing that someone cares enough to check in makes all the difference.

A Community That Looks Out for One Another

We value our privacy and independence here on the mountain, and we should. But being independent doesn’t mean we have to be disconnected. You don’t need to know everything about your neighbors. Just knowing their names, how to contact them, and whether they might need help could make a meaningful difference. No one in our community should feel invisible or forgotten.

A strong community isn’t just about where we live. It’s about the people who live alongside us.

WE HAVE A CHALLENGE FOR YOU!

This month, we encourage every Underwood resident to get to know at least one neighbor.

Introduce yourself.
