Local Garden Resources

The Underwood Community Organic Gardens (UCG) are located in the Underwood Community Park. They were founded in the Spring of 2013 through a Community Transformation grant awarded by the Washington State Department of Health and the Skamania County Community Health Department. Subsequent grants and donations have provided improvements to the original Garden Area, the Garden Room, our Hugelkultur herb bed, and Little Free Library.

There are 17 raised garden beds, each complete with individual drip systems, water, and timers. The garden area is surrounded by a deer and critter proof fence. Each box is rented on an annual basis (January 1 — December 31) and gardened with the “owner” planting, maintaining, and harvesting their own plants for personal use. The size of boxes ranges from 4’x4’ to 4’x16’ and the annual fees range from $25 to $55. Gardeners of all ages include residents from both Underwood and the greater Gorge area.

Our mission is to offer Underwood and nearby residents the opportunity to work, learn, and grow together through shared gardening experiences and to enrich our community with programs focused on vegetable and flower gardening, local food economy, nutrition, cooking, and food preservation.

Throughout the year, the UCG provides educational programs for children, teens and adults. We also host four (4) Eat In The Garden potlucks each summer and an open house event in April. Our Hugelkultur herb bed, and Little Free Library are available to the public from April through October. Many activities are co-sponsored with other like-minded organizations.

The vision of the Underwood Community Gardens is to promote, create and maintain organic community gardening in Underwood, Washington; to encourage community involvement through educational, informational, recreational programs, workshops and events focusing on garden related themes; to work collaboratively for the overall benefit of the community while providing a place for community residents to share the joys of gardening.

The Underwood Community Gardens is a Non-Profit Organization under the umbrella of the Washington Gorge Action Program (WGAP) in Bingen, WA. Donations are tax-deductible under Federal and State rules.
