5 Things to Know about the Post Office Renovation

Once complete, the Post Office building will have an exterior color scheme that is similiar to the Fire Station, adding a sense of unity and cohesion to the service buildings in Underwood.


The Underwood Post Office has been in it’s current location in Underwood since May 1996. Each month, the United States Postal Service pays the Underwood Park and Recreation District a modest fee to rent space in the current location. In October 2024, they renewed their rental contract for seven (7) year, and long as our community continues to invest in keeping our buildings maintained, we anticipate the post office will remain with us in Underwood for many years to come! Here are five things you should know about our upcoming renovations:


The Post Office building is owned by residents of Underwood

The Underwood Post Office building is a property (similar to the Community Center) that was included in a deed from Skamania County that granted Underwood residents ownership of the Community Center and Park under the leadership of a Board of Commissioners. All maintenance of the building is now the responsibility of the UPRD Board.

Construction is due to begin in March 2025.

If weather permits, updates to the post office building will begin in March 2025. When will the project start? Is that weather pending? Who is the contractor and how were they selected? How long do you anticipate the project will take in full?

Renovations will not interfere with normal business operations.

What assurance do you have that construction will not effect normal business operations? When will construction be complete? What can we expect to see in the process?

Once complete, the building will be substantially improved.

Total amount budgeted for capital improvements? Improvements will include new hardy plank siding, exterior lighting, fresh paint, a new window, and new entry and garage doors. This work will not interfere with regular post office operations, but it will significantly enhance the property once completed!

These are our tax dollars at work.

All major improvements to the post office building will be funded by tax levy dollars. Rental income on the property does not cover major infrastructure projects, and these updates would not have been possible if the levy had not passed. Many thanks again to those who voted in favor of funding Proposition 1 this year, helping us keep our Park and Community Center grounds properly maintained.
