Rhett and Tina Jacobi

Rhett and Tina Jacobi set sail in December 2023 from the Canary Islands, made a passage to Senegal, and then spent a month in Cabo Verde before heading out into the Atlantic Ocean and pointing the bow toward North America. They tied the knot midway through their transatlantic crossing, and they’ve called Underwood home ever since.

Hometown: San Francisco, CA (Tina) and Newport, VT + Standstead, Quebec (Rhett)

Current Job: Co-Founders of Big Water Construction

Side Hustles: Registered Nurse & Artist (Tina). Natural Building (Rhett).

Recreational Pursuit: Wing foiling, surfing, bodysurfing, biking, skiing, sailing, whitewater kayaking.

Go-to Adult Beverage: Mocktails, local wines, occasional dance-party elixirs.

Favorite Food: Mexican street tacos, every Thai curry, ramen, sushi.

Personal Interests

We love to cook at home.

Everybody’s Brewing and Mugen Noodle.

We got married midway through a transatlantic sailing trip, and our family spends their winters in Mainland Mexico running the Tailwind Jungle Lodge.

Meeting each other at our local wind launch, The Hatchery, back in 2022 and purchasing our fixer-upper home on Bert’s Place just 48 hours after returning from our 4 1/2-month-long sailing trip.

Big personalities. Always moving. Hard to pin down. Creative, loving, and ambitious with enough energy to back it up. 

At Home in Underwood

Underwood since May 2024. Rhett arrived to the Gorge in 2021. Tina arrived in 2018.

The beauty of the area mixed with the proximity to the Hatchery. Also, our dear friends live just up and down the street.

It’s a modest cabin-style home with plenty of opportunities for us to try out new materials, murals, and ways to upgrade, located in a park-like setting with room to grow. 

Yes, the deer loved it. We’re adding a fence this year so our asparagus survives!

As of late, we’ve been obsessed with this slow cooker mushroom stew (especially with all the chanterelle mushrooms we foraged in fall 2024). 

We have a corgi named Zorro. He is 6 years old and 50% of the time, he behaves all the time.

Community

Our business, Big Water Construction, sponsors the Gorge Speakeasy in Hood River. We also sponsor a student in San Poncho, Mexico (Nayarit), so they can attend school for the year. 

More events that are open to the public at the community center and engage with the towns of White Salmon and Hood River.
