The Underwood Community Organic  Gardens (UCG) is located in the Underwood Community Park and founded in the Spring of 2013 through a Community Transformation grant awarded by the Washington State Department of Health and the Skamainia County Community Health Department. Subsequent grants and donations have provided improvements to the original Garden Area, Garden Room, Hugelkultur Herb Bed, and Little Free Library.

There are 17 raised garden beds – each complete with individual drip systems, water, and timers – and the garden area is surrounded by a deer and critter proof fence.  Each box is rented on an annual basis – 1 January through 31 December – and gardened with the “owner”  planting,  maintaining, and harvesting their own plants for personal use. The size of boxes ranges from 4’ x 4’ to 4’ x 16’ and the annual fees range from $25 to $55 depending on size. Gardeners of all ages include residents from both Underwood and the greater Gorge area.

Resident Gardeners as well as the local community members can also benefit from garden-oriented events that are offered through-out the year for no or minimal cost. The Hugelkultur Herb Bed and the Little Free Library are located outside the fenced area and available for public use from April through October.
